Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka: Ghana’s Star Innovator (1948-2025). Apostle Dr. Kwadwo Safo Kantanka, affectionately called the Star of Africa, was one of Ghana’s most iconic inventors, industrialists, and religious leaders. Known for founding the Kristo Asafo Mission and Kantanka Automobile, his life story continues to inspire generations of Ghanaians. His death on 11 September 2025 marked the end of an era, but his legacy will keep shaping Ghana’s future for years to come.

    Early Life and Background

Born on 26 August 1948 in Bom near Kensere, in the Bekwai District of Ghana’s Ashanti Region, Kwadwo Safo displayed an early passion for mechanics, farming, and innovation. This natural curiosity would later shape his mission of blending faith with technology and empowering Ghanaians through industry.

Religious Leadership and Kristo Asafo Mission

Apostle Safo founded the Kristo Asafo Mission (Christ Reformed Church) with the aim of helping the less privileged and promoting self-sufficiency. The church quickly became more than just a place of worship — it became a centre for vocational training, technology development, and community transformation. His religious message focused on faith, discipline, and the belief that Africans could create their own solutions to everyday problems.

Founder of Kantanka Group and Automobile Manufacturing

One of Apostle Safo’s greatest achievements was the establishment of Kantanka Group of Companies, which focused on technology, agriculture, and automobile production.

In 1994, he officially started Kantanka Automobile, Ghana’s first local car manufacturing company. Under his leadership, Kantanka produced SUVs, pickups, and saloon cars designed for African roads. He also experimented with electric vehicles and robotics, proving that Ghanaian ingenuity could compete with global technology.

    Innovations and Technological Contributions

Apostle Safo’s genius went beyond cars. He created:

    • Agricultural machinery to support farmers
    • Robots and exoskeletons showcased at annual technology exhibitions
    • Solar-powered devices and household gadgets
    • Military-style vehicles for security purposes

These inventions were designed to solve practical problems in Ghana and reduce dependency on foreign imports.

    Philanthropy and Youth Empowerment

Apostle Safo was passionate about education and youth development. Through his church and businesses, he trained thousands of young people in engineering, mechanics, farming, and electronics. His mission was to empower Ghanaians to believe in their own potential and to create jobs locally.

    Challenges and Criticism

Despite his success, Apostle Safo faced criticism over the years. Some questioned whether Kantanka cars were fully made in Ghana since certain parts were imported. Others doubted the commercial sustainability of local car manufacturing. Nonetheless, he remained focused on his vision and continued to expand his projects despite these challenges.

    Death and Funeral Announcement

On Thursday, 11 September 2025, Apostle Dr. Kwadwo Safo Kantanka passed away peacefully at age 76. His death was officially announced by his family and the Kristo Asafo Church, with a statement signed by his daughter, Sarah Adwoa Safo. His passing was met with widespread grief across Ghana, with tributes pouring in from politicians, industrialists, religious leaders, and ordinary citizens.

    Legacy and Impact

Apostle Safo leaves behind a remarkable legacy as a man who proved that Ghana can build its own future. His vision for a self-reliant Africa inspired young inventors, engineers, and entrepreneurs. Kantanka cars remain a symbol of Ghanaian pride and a reminder that local innovation is possible.

His life teaches that faith, determination, and creativity can transform not just individuals but entire nations. Future generations will continue to study his work as a blueprint for African industrialisation.
