Do Basic and Senior High School Teachers in Ghana Earn the Same Salary? – Check HereThere has been a long-standing debate among teacher trainees and the general public about whether teachers at the Basic School level (KG, Primary, and JHS) earn the same salary as those teaching at the Senior High School (SHS) level.

Many people believe that SHS teachers earn more due to the nature of their work and qualifications. But how true is this?

In this article, we break down the facts about teacher salaries in Ghana and provide a clear answer.

    1. Unified Salary Structure in Ghana

Teacher salaries in Ghana are regulated under the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS), introduced to ensure fairness and uniformity across the public sector.

    Under this system:

    • All teachers are placed on a common salary scale
    • Pay is not determined by the level of school
    • Salaries are standardized across the Ghana Education Service (GES)

This means that whether a teacher is posted to a Basic School or a Senior High School, the salary structure remains the same.

    2. What Determines a Teacher’s Salary?

Instead of the school level, the following factors determine how much a teacher earns:

    a. Rank within GES

Teachers are paid based on their rank, such as:

    • Superintendent II
    • Superintendent I
    • Principal Superintendent
    • Assistant Director
    • Deputy Director

    Higher rank equals higher salary.

    b. Academic Qualification

    • Diploma holders earn less
    • Degree holders earn more
    • Postgraduate degree holders earn even higher

Qualification determines the entry point on the salary scale.

    c. Years of Service & Promotion

    • The longer a teacher works, the higher their salary
    • Promotions lead to salary increments

Experience plays a major role in earnings.

    3. So, Do Basic and SHS Teachers Earn the Same?

YES ,if they have the same rank and qualification

A teacher at a Junior High School with:

    • The same qualification
    • The same rank

will earn exactly the same salary as a teacher at a Senior High School.

    For example:

    • A Principal Superintendent with a degree at JHS
    • A Principal Superintendent with a degree at SHS

Both will receive the same salary

    4. Why People Think SHS Teachers Earn More

Despite the unified salary structure, many people still believe SHS teachers earn more. This misconception exists because:

    a. Higher Qualifications

    Most SHS teachers:

    • Hold Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees
    • Are placed on higher salary levels

    b. Additional Responsibilities

SHS teachers often take extra roles such as:

    • Housemaster/Housemistress
    • Head of Department
    • Boarding supervision

These roles come with extra allowances, increasing their total earnings.

    c. School Environment

    SHS institutions are often:

    • Better resourced
    • More structured

This creates the impression that teachers there are better paid.

    5. Salary Differences in Reality

Although the salary structure is the same, actual earnings may differ due to:

    • Allowances
    • Promotions
    • Extra duties
    • Qualification levels

    For instance:

    • Basic school teachers may earn around GHS 2,200 – GHS 3,200
    • SHS teachers may earn GHS 2,800 – GHS 4,200

But this difference is mainly due to qualification and rank, not the school level itself.

    6. Who Teaches Where?

    Generally:

    • College of Education graduates → Basic Schools
    • University graduates → Senior High Schools

This difference in training contributes to the perception of salary inequality.

    Conclusion

    The facts are clear:

Basic School and Senior High School teachers in Ghana do NOT earn different salaries based on where they teach.

     Salaries are determined by:

    • Rank
    • Qualification
    • Experience

     Any perceived difference comes from:

    • Higher qualifications
    • Additional responsibilities
    • Allowances

In simple terms, same rank + same qualification = same salary, regardless of whether the teacher is in a Basic School or SHS.
