Education Minister Approves Nationwide NHIS Sensitisation Programme and Inter-Regional Quiz Competition

The Minister for Education, Honourable Haruna Iddrisu, has approved a nationwide NHIS sensitisation programme alongside an inter-regional quiz competition aimed at strengthening students’ knowledge of healthcare in Ghana.

This decision follows a strategic meeting with the National Health Insurance Authority, led by its Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe.

    Overview of the Initiative

The programme is a collaborative effort between the National Health Insurance Authority and the Ghana Education Service. It is designed to engage Senior High School students across all regions of the country.

The core objective is to deepen students’ understanding of the National Health Insurance Scheme while promoting responsible health-seeking behaviour among young people.

    Programme Timeline and Structure

The nationwide sensitisation and quiz competition will run from May to November 2026, covering all regions in Ghana.

Selected Senior High Schools will participate in a structured competition where students will be tested on key aspects of the NHIS. These include knowledge of registration processes, benefits of the scheme, and the importance of health insurance in everyday life.

The quiz format is expected to encourage active learning, critical thinking, and healthy academic competition among students.

    Promoting Universal Health Coverage

This initiative forms part of Ghana’s broader efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage. By targeting students at the Senior High School level, the programme aims to build a generation that is well-informed about healthcare systems and proactive in accessing medical services.

Through education and engagement, students will not only gain knowledge but also serve as ambassadors of the NHIS within their families and communities.

    Role of Stakeholders

The Ghana Education Service will play a key role in coordinating participation among schools and ensuring smooth implementation of the programme across regions.

The National Health Insurance Authority will provide the necessary educational materials, training, and technical support to guide the sensitisation process and quiz content.

This collaboration highlights the importance of partnerships between the education and health sectors in driving national development.

    Impact on Students and Schools

The programme is expected to have a significant impact on students by increasing awareness of healthcare policies and encouraging informed decision-making.

Participating schools will benefit from academic exposure, recognition, and the opportunity to compete at regional and national levels.

Beyond the competition, the initiative will instill lifelong knowledge about health insurance and personal wellbeing.

    Final Thoughts

The approval of the NHIS sensitisation programme and inter-regional quiz competition marks a major step toward integrating health education into Ghana’s school system.

As the programme rolls out from May to November 2026, it is expected to empower students with essential knowledge that will contribute to a healthier and more informed society.

This initiative not only promotes academic excellence but also reinforces the importance of healthcare awareness in national development.
